The Pontotoc Red Sox left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning ... but it didn’t matter.
Coach Nickey Browning's Mississippi State Champion American Legion baseball team defeated the Texarkana Razorbacks 6-1 in Thursday’s Game 2 of the Mid-South Regionals — an eight-team, five-day, double-elimination affair.
The Razorbacks, the Arkansas State Champions, were held to only five hits in the game by winning pitcher Dylan Earnest (Hamilton) who went the distance, striking out 10 of 34 batters faced.
The Red Sox scored one run in the second, third and sixth innings and added three more in the top of the ninth.
Texarkana’s lone run, coming in the bottom of the second inning, was unearned.
Pontotoc was led at the plate by Phillip Tice (New Hope), Zach Chavers (Pontotoc) and Jake Smithey (Pontotoc) with multiple hits each.
The Sox will play again at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, Friday evening in Game 8.
Pontotoc will take on the tournament host - Texarkana (Tx) Tigers.
