Pontotoc County supervisors approved a resolution to set in motion a $90 million grant to four-lane Highway 9 from Sherman to Highway 6.
“For whatever reason, the legislature decided to work through MDA [Mississippi Development Authority] for this grant,” said Jonathan Dyer with Three Rivers Planning and Development District. “This is the largest one I’ve ever seen. Basically, Pontotoc County will receive the money and you will pass it on to MDOT to build and maintain that road.”
Dyer said this resolution will get the process started.
“There is no money or match required, it is a straight $90 million allocation.”
Dyer said the plus is that the resolution says that MDOT is to build and maintain the road.
The supervisors also gave the go ahead and approved for improvements to be made to Cochran Road which runs north of Endville Road in a northwesterly direction toward Union County.
The 2.6-mile project was bid out to Kimes and Stone for $134,227.99.
A representative with the company was on hand and said that they would be ready to proceed immediately on the road project.
Residents in the area should be aware that the work will begin soon and should be cautious while driving the road.
The board also re-appointed Early McKinney to the Three Rivers board for a five-year term which will last until 2015.
The board also approved the annual interlocal agreement between Union, Pontotoc and Chickasaw counties and the municipalities that are in the G.M.and O. for the grant for the Rails to Trails.
Also the board agreed to maintain the litter control on the trail.
