While the 5-2 Vikings of North Pontotoc and the 7-0 Warriors of Pontotoc will be on the road to New Albany and Shannon, respectively, the 3-5 Cougars of South Pontotoc will be hosting Water Valley.

The Cougars

The 3-4 Blue Devils of Water Valley have rushed for over 1,200 yards so far this season, and South Pontotoc head coach Mark Bray is well aware of the situation at hand.

“They are a run oriented team and we will have to load up on the line of scrimmage to try and stop them,” Bray said. “They will throw the football some, but they live or die by the run.”

The Vikings

The 4-4 Bulldogs of New Albany are coming off a 34-7 loss at Itawamba AHS and are 0-2 in the division.

Looking for their first Region 1-4A win, head coach J.J. Plummer is optimistic about his Vikings’ chances.

“We want to go out Monday and practice as hard as we can and execute as well as we can,” Plummer said after Friday’s 26-14 loss at Shannon. “We have an opportunity to go down there Friday and try to find a way to win the football game.

“There's no game that we feel is out of reach for us.

“So if we can create a couple of wins then the playoffs might be there,” he added.

“So these next three weeks are crucial for us and we're going to give it our best shot.”

Next up for North is Tishomingo County and Pontotoc.

The Warriors

“We can’t change a lot of stuff. We’ve got to go play and do what we do, and give ourselves a chance to win the ballgame,” said Pontotoc head coach Charlie Dampeer of Friday night’s game at top-rated Shannon.

“They’ve got a great running back (senior Keon McGaughy), and they are very, very active on defense.

“They probably don’t throw it as much as a typical Shannon team, because the kid’s a down-hill runner.

“He’s the real deal. We will have to put a hat on him and stop him.

“Now they can throw it,” Dampeer added. “Their quarterback is about 6’ 4” and he can sling it, but he (McGaughy) is the key.”

With 1,107 rushing yards to date and 17 touchdowns, McGaughy is averaging 8.14 yards per carry.

The Red Raider defense is averaging five quarterback sacks per outing.
