JACKSON, Miss. — Three Mississippians are among the more than 100 recipients of Presidential Awards for Excellence for teachers or mentors in mathematics, engineering and science.

President Barack Obama announced the awards Thursday, and the recipients will be recognized this fall during a ceremony at the White House.

Jerzy R. Leszczynski from Jackson State University is being honored for his work as a mentor.

In addition to Collins, teachers Amy Ellis of Starkville, Miss., and Jeanette Simmons of Pontotoc, Miss., were named awards of excellence winners.

According to the White House, the teachers were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians and educators after an initial selection process at the state level.

The pre-college-level teachers are selected K-6 and 6-12 in alternate years. This year, all 87 teachers were chosen from elementary schools.

A White House news release says each of the honorees will receive $10,000.
