SPRINGVILLE — Senior Night normally means a trip down memory lane, recalling the accomplishments of the past four years while looking toward to trials and tribulations of the future.

The South Pontotoc Cougars used their Senior Night on Friday to display an explosive offense and beat the Louisville Wildcats 79-52 in District 2-3A hardwood action at the South Pontotoc High School gym.

After holding a 30-21 halftime lead, the Cougars (16-5 overall, 1-1 in District 2-3A) outscored Louisville 33-10 in the third quarter en route to the runaway victory.

South Pontotoc’s pressing zone defense forced Louisville into five turnovers in the third period, while the Cougars shot 56 percent (9-for-16) from the field while sinking 12-of-16 from the free-throw line in the period.

“We did all right once we dried our tears from Senior Night,” South Pontotoc head coach Chris Vandiver said. “I told (the Cougars) we were going to have a 30-point third quarter. I thought we could play defense enough. I thought we could score enough.”

The third period

Vandiver’s prognostication proved on the mark, as the Cougars made eight of their first nine shots to open the third. The eighth made shot came on a 10-foot jumper from the right wing by senior post player Doyce Britt that capped a 13-4 run to push South Pontotoc to a 43-25 lead with 4:20 left in the third period. Britt led all scorers with 19 points, including 13 in the third period.

Meanwhile, the South Pontotoc defense tightened its grip in the third period.

The pressure applied by the Cougars forced Louisville into committing more team fouls (14) in the third period than it had points (10).

After the Wildcats’ point guard was whistled for a charge after bowling over Britt for the second time in the period, the Louisville coach vehemently argued with officials, earning his a technical foul.

Junior guard Jermaine Bean then sank both technical foul free throws to open South Pontotoc’s lead to 48-27 with 3:29 left in the third.

Bean finished with 14 points.

Britt, who led all scorers with 19 points, showed his range and occasionally stepped out to the perimeter.

His second of two 3-pointers helped the Cougars coast out to a nice 62-29 advantage.

Clearing the bench

With the game well in hand, Vandiver emptied his bench at the start of the fourth quarter, with senior guard Thad Middlebrook making the most of his playing time. Middlebrook drained a 3-pointer from the right corner to make it 74-50.

“Thad played some positive minutes,” Vandiver said.

“We put him in some pressure situations and he responded well.”

The first half

It appeared early on as if the Cougars would have little trouble with Louisville. South Pontotoc opened the game with a 10-2 run ignited by sophomore forward Wesley Barefield’s 3-pointer from the right wing that made it 7-0. The run was capped by senior guard Johnathan Ware, who knocked down a long, pro-range 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Cougars their 8-point cushion. Ware chipped in 13 points for the Cougars.

South Pontotoc led 14-9 after the first period, but saw that sliced on a Louisville 3-pointer that made it 14-12.

Holding on to a slim 21-19 lead, the Cougars closed the first half with a 9-2 run highlighted by junior guard Gary Lipsey, who stole a Louisville inbounds pass and hit the quick layup to make it 25-19.

The season wraps up

South Pontotoc will play its final four regular-season games on the road, including Friday’s tilt at North Pontotoc. The Division 2-3A tournament begins Feb. 9 at Nettleton.
